The Role
We are seeking a highly organized and experienced Architectural Specification Writer to join our team. In this critical role, you will bridge the gap between creative design and physical construction though development of technical specifications for publicly bid projects. You will work closely with our project architects, designers, and engineering consultants to translate design intent into precise, comprehensive, and legally sound Project Manuals fit for bidding under Massachusetts public bid laws primarily.
If you have a deep understanding of building science, construction materials, and CSI MasterFormat, and you thrive on getting the details exactly right, we want you on our team.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Manuals: Develop, edit, and coordinate comprehensive architectural specifications and Project Manuals for all phases of design (SD, DD, CD).
- Team Collaboration: Partner with Project Managers and Architects to understand project scope, design intent, and material selections. Coordinate specifications with drawings to ensure alignment and eliminate discrepancies.
- Consultant Coordination: Integrate engineering and specialty consultant specifications into the final Project Manual.
- Material Research: Research new products, materials, and building technologies. Advise project teams on material suitability, performance, availability, and cost implications.
- Code & Standards Compliance: Ensure all specifications comply with current building codes, industry standards (ASTM, ANSI, UL), and sustainability goals (LEED, WELL, etc.).
- Master Specifications: Maintain and update the firm’s master specification library to reflect current industry best practices and firm standards.
- Construction Administration Support: Assist the CA team by reviewing product submittals, substitution requests, and RFIs to ensure alignment with the specified requirements.
- Tool Development: Work with internal innovation studio (“Noodle Shop”) to develop new software tools and technology to assist in your specification writing.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional experience in the architecture/construction industry, with a minimum of 2+ years dedicated specifically to writing architectural specifications.
- Expert knowledge of the CSI MasterFormat, SectionFormat, and PageFormat.
- Strong understanding of building envelope systems, interior construction, and architectural materials.
- Proficiency with specification software (e.g., MasterSpec, SpecLink, e-SPECS) and standard office software (Word, Bluebeam).
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with an eagle eye for detail.
Preferred:
- CSI Certifications: Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) or Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) is highly desirable.
- Licensed Architect desirable but not required.
- Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and BIM processes as they relate to specifications.
- Experience with sustainable design standards (LEED, ILFI, WELL).
